Cyborg Scarf

I finished this project a few days ago. It’s knitted and crocheted, with electrical wire and normal wool yarn. I’ve uploaded some finished pictures, and some pictures from the making of it as well. I called it the Cyborg Scarf because I wanted it to look like a really elegant scarf from first glance, but when you look closer, you see ‘holes’ that peer into the inner machinery.

The inside wires are hidden by a piece of felt that I made. The scarf is powered through two 3v batteries and the light sequence is programmed on a Lilypad Arduino. It cycles through several blinking and fading lights, which I wanted to seem erradic, like a failing piece of machinery.

I plan to take better pictures of this when I have access to a proper photography studio.

Men’s Dress Shirt Workshop

Did a workshop today with Jill Harrop at school. We used men’s dress shirts and transformed them into new clothing. It was a ton of fun to do, and I really enjoyed working this way. I worked on these with a classmate. The above photos are my favorite. I’m going to be sewing this into an actual dress.
The ones below are some more that I really enjoyed making.

Working on a project!

Hope to have it done in a few days, hooray!

Good Catch Old School Woolly Grooves Fall Craft Fair

Here's the poster for a craft show that I'll be in.

Just posting here to let everyone know that I’m going to be in the Good Catch Old School Woolly Grooves Fall Craft Fair on September 13th. It runs from 12pm-5pm and its at 1556 Queen Street West (at Sorauren) in the backyard of the Good Catch General Store. The poster above has all the information (and my company name is on it, yay). Here’s a link to a facebook event, if you want to join that.

This/Last Month

I haven’t had much time to work on anything, I had a tonsilectomy last month and this month I’m kind of busy. My last flameworking class for this semester is today.

I’ve been recycling beer bottles and making them into glasses. It’s been interesting. I just started using a vinyl cutter to make a pattern for the glasses so that I can sandblast a design into them. Hopefully I’ll have a set of them in the shop by the end of the month.

As of September, I’ll have access to a textile studio so I can work on screenprinted things (I wanted to make aprons and t-shirts and stuff like that).

Craft Show

I just finished my first craft show, I had a booth set up at the Big On Bloor festival in downtown Toronto.

Thanks to everyone that stopped by!

I’ll be adding several things to the shop over the next few days, mainly things that were on my table at the show. They’ll be available for purchase online.

Here’s a picture of my table, I thought there were more pictures taken, but I guess not. There were a lot of people taking random pictures of my stuff so maybe I’ll end up finding them somewhere on flickr later.

Shop is Up

The shop was down for a while because I didn’t have any products to really sell, and the system I was using was not so amazing. I’ve fixed it all and everything should be working now. I also implemented the Canada Post shipping calculator so that should be working now as well.

I’ll be adding a few more products over the next few days hopefully.

Scarves and Scarfettes

Here’s some of the scarves I’ve been making this week. I’m still working on olive, light blue, orange, black and red ones. I’ll probably just add them to the shop when I’m done.

They’re made with wool and silk, and dyed with kool aid. I’ve had a ton of fun making them. I love the texture.

Craft Show

So it looks like I’m going to have a table at the Big On Bloor Festival. This will be the first craft show I’ll be in, so I’m worried a bit. I have to get my inventory up, I’m been trying to do this since I got out of school for the summer. I’ve made quite a few silk/wool scarves, a whole bunch of glass pendants and some glass earrings. I’ll probably update with pictures of a few things this weekend, as I’m trying to get my online store set up and functioning.

Super Wired Exhibition Photos

How It Works
The skirt is turned on by a conductive velcro switch. When the velcro is fastened, the white lights on the skirt turn on. There’s a switch inside the left shoe. When you step with your left foot, it puts pressure on the switch and activates a wireless transmitter that sends a signal to the skirt to turn on red LEDs. Below is a video of the red LEDs turning on.

Artist Statement
There are several actions that typically signify anger, including clenched fists, yelling, and stomping. Ariela and Tashi’s character used the power of natural elements to defeat her enemies. The idea was that when she would stomp her feet, her wand would activate her elemental powers. As for Blake’s character, his tattered garb inspired the burned and worn aesthetic in the piece. Both of the students’ characters were superheroes ultimately fueled, to some degree, by anger. Working with the concept of stomping, I incorporated elements of the students’ work to create an outfit as dark and disparaging as anger itself.

My project will be up at the Textile Museum of Canada until the beginning of June :)
